Marangu Route

Day 1:

The most regular used route is Marangu Route. An estimated 65% of climbers approach the Mountain from this route. This is also known as Coca Cola Route. This follows easy angled path through magnified Rain Forest to the Mandara Hut (2743m). This is approximately 3 hours walk from the gate. Dinner and overnight.

Day 2:

After breakfast, you keep walking viewing the forest belt. As you go you’ll enter into Moorlands, and see groundsels, lobelia and other tropical high altitude plants. After passing through this, you arrive at Horombo Hut (3760m). It is approximately 5 hours walk from Mandara Hut. Dinner and overnight.

Day 3:

After breakfast you ascend past the last water point traversing the saddle between Kibo and Mawenzi, this is high altitude desert separating the rugged Mawenzi Summit and loose scree. Here, your porters will fetch fresh water because there is no water at Kibo Hut. After crossing the Saddle you reach Kibo Hut (4730m). It is approximately 5 hours walk from Horombo Hut. Dinner and overnight.

Day 4:

An early start for the Summit on the steep and heavy screes up to the Gilman’s point 568m on the crater rim. Continue around the rim to Uhuru Peak (5895m) the Highest Point in Africa. It is approximately 7 hours walk from Kibo Hut. Descend to Kibo Hut for tea and cakes or soup and continue to Horombo hut for dinner and overnight.

Day 5:

Descend to Marangu gate. Drive back to your Hotel for warm bath, dinner and overnight.
